The first time I stepped up to the rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona I was in awe. I had seen many picture of the canyon so I thought I knew what I would see. No single photo could begin to show its amazing beauty.
Central Oregon is like that too.

Ochoco Mountains Central Oregon
Central Oregon is big country.

Miles of wide open space
It’s hard to get your mind wrapped around it unless you have experienced it. I grew up out west so I’m used to the vastness of the western states.

When I moved to the east coast I learned the word “claustrophobic”. Everything is close and tight. Now don’t get your hackles up if you’re an easterner. I’s not that one is better than the other.
It’s all in what you like. There are some beautiful places in the east, but most of what I have seen that isn’t developed is heavily forested. It’s like living in a fishbowl because if you want to see the sky you have to look up.

I have to see the sky. Out west you don’t have to look up to see it. It’s right there all around you. Beautiful horizons, beckoning to come explore. I love the way the sky merges with the desert floor with the mountains in the distance.

Sometimes it’s hard to tell where the ground ends and the sky begins. It gives me a sense of freedom knowing there is so much space around me. When I try to explain it to someone who has never been out west I usually get out some pictures to show them. Even so…. A picture can’t do justice to this incredible land.

Don,
Openness and vastness does stretch one’s horizon and restorel a sense of humbleness on our part.
In front of the vast universe, we appear to be so minute and insignificant.

Well said John. you get it.

Don:
The problem with pictures is that they place borders on vistas and views that shouldn’t have any. It takes away from their grandeur. You do a good job of communicating the beauty however.

I am always in awe at these vistas… Yosemite is one of my favorite spots on earth, the view from Glacier Point reveals the actions of forces that are beyond our understanding. And Grand Canyon is simply incredible as well…

I love wide open spaces … living on anything under 5 acres is crowded to me but I grew up in the country so that’s what I’m used to. On the flipside, I lived in Toronto for almost 10 years and have lived in other cities as well.
In the end, I think there is beauty almost everywhere … it’s a matter of appreciating it.
Someday, I hope to travel to the western states on our camping tours … so far we’ve only managed the very southwest and a lot of the east coast.
Thanks for the beautiful pictures

I was fortunate enough to take a driving trip out west years ago. We covered roughly 500 miles a day-and got a chance to see a panorama of the country. When I got back to North Carolina—-yep claustaphobic was the word.
Pictures are beautiful as always
Thanks

Interestingly, I too have to see the sky – even though I’m a city boy. I often go to my building’s roof just to spend time looking at the horizon. Very few Londoners seem to understand this need.
Thank you for these beautiful pictures of Central Oregon’s amazing beauty. Reading your blog is a wonderful breath of fresh air.
All the best,

I relate very well to what you’re saying , Don. I’m a western girl and like nothing better than pulling out on the road and just driving across the vastness of our land. I love the geology, the color changes of land and sky and chatting with the people at unky stops along the way.

Don,
I’ve been to the Grand Canyon once, and truly, pictures do not do it justice. It is amazing; and despite the beauty of the photos you’ve provided in this post, I imagine the same is true Central Oregon.

The pictures you post of central oregon are beautiful, however, I’m sure that the same as with the Grand Canyon, the pictures are no where near as magnificent as actually seeing it.
