Got Trees?
Central Oregon does.
Oh not the kind most people are used to. Central Oregon is home to the Juniper tree.

Central Oregon Juniper tree
It takes a special kind of tree to adapt to the poor soil and lack of rainfall and the juniper fits right in. The juniper is one tough tree and a personal favorite of mine. It withstands drought, high winds and just about anything man or nature can throw at it.

Juniper tree used as an elk rub
This young juniper was unfortunate to be in the path of a big bull elk.
The elk and deer thrash these trees to rub the drying velvet off their antlers. even though this tree might die, many survive this kind of abuse.

Sometimes it can even survive forest fire. Just about the only thing that can kill a juniper is a chainsaw.
I’m always looking for the unique shapes that trees can grow. Even when twisted and contorted from the forces of nature, junipers are able survive when most trees would die.

a true survivor
If you look closely you can see that this tree is still growing healthy branches.
Even when Junipers die they can be intersting to look at. One never knows what unusual shapes one might find.

Now wasn’t that fun? Tune in next time when we’ll talk about rocks. Bye!

Hi Don,
Oh I really LOVE how you tell the story of the Junipers of Central Oregon and their being a sturdy and resilient tree. THe shapes they contort into for survival and thriving where others do not is HIGHLY intriguing and a wonderful model and example for life, loss, and entrepreneurs.

Don,
Trees in artistic forms!
The type of tree that hoards huge amount of water inside its trunk fascinates me. Great for bush fire prone areas as protection.

Juniper trees are badasses! I never knew that. I was at Mt. St. Helens about 10 years ago and was blown away at how so many millions of trees were just devastated. Like a bomb went off. It blew my mind.

Interesting info about Juniper trees.
Many years ago, my brother and I drove across the country, from California to Tennessee. While driving through some of the desert areas out west, we went through an area where there was desert on both sides of the highway, and mountains in the distance. There was a constant strong wind blowing across the highway, and the trees were bent, i.e. they had grown bent, in the direction of the wind. I don’t remember exactly where we were or what state we were in at the time. But I’ve never forgotten that, and now that I read your post, I wonder if those trees were Juniper trees.

Junipers are very cool. I think we have them around here. Not positive because I’m not very “out doorsy” but I think we do. Love the pictures. Interesting shapes.
